Group That Usually Gets What it Wants Sues to Remove Trump from Ballot

As is typical, those opposing former President Donald Trump are doing all they can to ensure he doesn’t ever hold office again. In Colorado, that means one group is filing an official lawsuit to bar Trump’s name from the ballot.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, or CREW, filed a lawsuit in the state of Colorado on Wednesday demanding that Trump’s name not be allowed to be put on the ballot because of his actions on and around January 6, 2021.

According to the group, those actions and words led to “insurrection” against the US government, and the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution strictly forbids anyone who has done such from holding any public and elected office.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment reads:

“No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any state, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any state legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any state, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.”

Basically, because Trump was a president and took an oath to protect the Constitution if he participated in “insurrection” like behaviors, he can be barred from ever holding office again.

The group has already barred former Otero County Commissioner Couy Griffin from running for office due to his actions on January 6. He crossed the barriers at the Capitol that day and walked toward it.

However, Trump wasn’t actually there that day.

So, there is a big question as to “if” insurrection was actually called for by him – particularly when you look at videos of him telling protesters to “stand down,” go home and stay peaceful.

It seems to me, and Trump, that this is just another attempt at “election interference.”
